  • KOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation market department has decided to dismantle the scaffolding of the Barnaparichay market in College Street to avoid freak accidents as the scaffolding is posing a threat to the pedestrians and motorists. Member, mayor-in-council overseeing the KMC market, Amiruddin Bobby on Monday said the civic body had decided to dismantle the scaffolding following repeated attempts to steal parts of the iron structure by local miscreants.

“Several parts of the mammoth scaffolding were stolen in the past several months. Such frequent stealing has led to weakening of the iron structure which now poses a major threat to the pedestrians, motorists and bikers. Hence we have decided to dismantle the structure. The work has started and it will continue for a couple of days,” said the MMiC.

Secretary of Barnaparichay market Subhasish Dey alleged that parts of the scaffolding were being stolen slowly in the past five years. “The entire scaffolding structure has become weak due to frequent and repeated stealing of its parts by a group of miscreants. Initially, the security guards employed by a private agency that had signed an agreement with the KMC for redevelopment of the market tried to resist the miscreants. But, some of them were beaten so badly that later they couldn’t muster courage to prevent such stealing. Hope the civic brass now will bring down the structure to prevent freak accidents,” said Dey.
