  • Kolkata: A man was killed by a tiger in the Sundarbans on Monday while he was on a fishing trip. By the time two of his fellow villagers came to his rescue, he was already dead. The victim, Dipak Mondal of Kumirmari’s Bagnapara, had ventured into a forest under the Bagna range along with a team of villagers to catch crabs.

“Dipak was with Pradip Mondal and his brother Sudip. They went into the mudflats in search of crabs when a tiger pounced on Dipak. The animal then dragged him inside the forest. Pradip and Sudip managed to chase away the tiger, but Dipak couldn’t be saved,” said a source, adding that the incident happened near Kapura River.

Sources said authorities were investigating whether the villagers had fishing permits. At least 2-3 other boats were allegedly on the trip during the incident.
