  • Kolkata, till the end of this week, will continue to record a slight chill in the air, the regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

The IMD added that on Thursday, both the highest and lowest temperatures are likely to record a dip, a departure from what the city has been witnessing since last week.

According to officials, while the highest temperature is likely to be around 25.1°C, the lowest is expected to reach 16.7°C on Thursday. Last week, the highest temperatures hovered around 28°C while the lowest remained around 21°C.

The MeT officials have also predicted no rains in the city till Sunday.

Meanwhile, the mercury is likely to dip not just in Kolkata but in other parts of West Bengal too.

In Purulia and Sriniketan in Birbhum district, the minimum temperature is expected to reach 11 degrees Celsius, which is comparatively lower than the 15°C to 17°C temperatures these places were recording earlier this week.

The MeT department also said that Murshidabad, which earlier this week was recording lowest temperatures around 15°C-17°C, is likely to witness a lowest temperature of 9.5°C during nighttime on Thursday. In Baharampur, Bishnupur, Burdwan and Bankura, the lowest temperature is expected to hover around 13°C-14°C.

An official of the MeT department said, “There is less chances of precipitation across south Bengal.”

In North Bengal, the lowest temperature in Darjeeling is likely to reach 1.6°C during nighttime on Thursday. The official said, “Light rain is also likely to occur at one or two places in Darjeeling district and a relief from the showers may be expected from Friday.”

The minimum temperature in Cooch Behar district is expected to dip to 7°C during the nighttime, while Kalimpong, Siliguri and Jalpaiguri may witness lowest temperatures around 9°C on Thursday. “The temperature in Malda may reach 13°C during nighttime,” the official added.

He further said, “Except for Darjeeling, no other northern region is likely to get rain. From Friday to Sunday, the entire northern region, including Darjeeling, is expected to remain dry, with shallow to moderate fog.”
