  • Calling the situation in Sandeshkhali village of North 24 Parganas district “worst that could happen in a civilised society”, West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Saturday directed the state government to submit a report into the recent protests by local residents.

In a video message released by the Raj Bhavan late Saturday night, Bose said, “The Sandeshkhali incident shows the worst that could happen in a civilised society. Women are harassed and assaulted there. The established government has to act firmly and effectively.”

“No one will be allowed to take the law into their hands. The government has a responsibility to put an end to this. I understand that prohibitory orders have been issued there, the police are there, the Assembly is in session when in such a situation a goon or his group can take the law into their hands, then it means it’s a warning to the civil society,” he added. He also said, “Come together, fight together and destroy it. Put the violence in the coffin and drive the last nail on it.” “…Never ever think Bengal is a Banana Republic. Never think that goons will have their day.”
