  • KOLKATA: A man in his 30s who had climbed atop an iron structure of Maa flyover with a noose threatening to die by suicide and disrupted normal traffic for over several minutes on Sunday morning, was lured down by cops and firemen with offer of Biryani and soft drinks to bring him down.

Police said the man – a resident of Tiljala – had climbed the iron railings with two flags and began criticising the state of politics in the country before locals and motorists spotted him and called police.

Had he slipped, he would have fallen 40 feet down on the flyover and got hit by cars or hit the electric poles and the railway tracks 100 feet below, said an officer who was part of the rescue operation.

A team of policemen, firemen and DMG personnel started interacting with the man while another group of personnel were climbing the bridge using a ladder. He came down after the offers of Biryani and cold drink were made following a lot of deliberation.

He was initially taken to Karaya police station where he was shifted to Kolkata national medical college and hospital for treatment with his family members. His family have told cops he was undergoing some mental issues and was under treatment.
