  • Kolkata: The state government has created the post of 324 ‘chikitsa sahayaks’, who would be able to initiate medical care in case of emergency at government health facilities, if a doctor is not available. These posts are likely to be filled up by experienced nurses. The modalities of recruitment and other details are yet to be worked out. The veteran nurses will have to crack a recruitment test, sources said.

Health officials said the ‘sahayaks’ would work as per certain guidelines, specifying certain dos and don’ts and the type of cases they can handle.

The state has also created 386 posts of joint nursing superintendents. It is, however, unclear what role these nurses will play.tnn
