• Mamata lays foundation stone for medical college in Barasat

  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee virtually laid the foundation stone for Snayu Tirtha Medical College & Hospital, an initiative of the Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (I-NK), at Shason Gram Panchayat, North 24 Parganas in Barasat.

    Acknowledging the move by I-NK to establish a medical college with 150 seats and 800-bed hospital, Banerjee said, “It is going to be benefit the Neuroscience stream along with neurosurgeons and neurologists…The 150-seat medical college and 800 beds hospital is a big and wonderful initiative by the group. There is a dearth of neurologists in Bengal and it will fill up the gap.”

    “For education and wider service to the patients, our plan now, is to establish a medical college named I-NK Medical college (STMC) and a 800-bed multi-specialty general hospital in a campus to be known as Snayu Tirtha,” read a statement issued by I-NK.

    The I-NK has acquired a large area of land in Khamar Naobad near Rajarhat, North 24 Parganas for SnayuTirtha, where all medical facilities will be provided by the National Medical Council (NMC). In addition, the premises will also have colleges of paramedical sciences and nursing.

    The institute’s authorities said that the full time teachers at the medical college will be supported by guest teachers from Newcastle University, UK, among others, to educate students. The syllabus will be based on the current NMC guidelines and help students seeking education abroad.
