• Tibetan Delight to reopen today after 3-wk shutdown

  • Kolkata: A Tibetan eatery, whose forced shutdown had led to an outpouring of grief in the social media from customers — present and past — from India as well as abroad, is set to reopen on Tuesday.

Tibetan Delight on 66/1 Chowringhee Road will start serving its famed roast chilli pork, chicken and pork momo, thukpa and chilli chicken dry from noon on Tuesday after being shut for three weeks.

The pollution control board had issued a closure notice for failing to raise the chimney stack height above the nearest tallest building and non-compliance with the standards of effluent treatment. The eatery has set up an effluent treatment plant, paid a fine to the National Green Tribunal and increased the stack height.

“After the snapped electricity connection was restored on Friday, we began work on the chimney stack height to raise it beyond the building in front. PCB officials were extremely cooperative. They inspected the site on Sunday and issued the order to reopen on Monday,” said Riki Mukhia, the daughter-in-law of owner Nima.

The news will bring cheers to several thousand fans that the eatery tucked behind Asli Lakhi Babu Ka Sona Chandi Gehana Ka Dukan near Bishop Lefroy Road-Chowringhee Road crossing had unknowingly cultivated over the decades. That came to light when the closure news was reported by TOI on Feb 8.

Some customers trooped down to the eatery to check the status. Others dialled its phone numbers to find out if it would reopen. Riki’s husband Prashat even received a call from a Kolkatan now living in the US.

Film director Srijit Mukherjee, who had shared the TOI article on Facebook with the comment: “a slice of college life; just cannot imagine”, was delighted to learn that the eatery was reopening. “That is fantastic news. Will go there in the coming week,” he said.

Riki expects many old customers who have reconnected after learning about the eatery’s travails to revisit after they open. “We are grateful for the support that we have received from patrons and look forward to serving them again,” she said.
