  • Kolkata: Listening to songs, reading books, catching up with friends, spending time with family, practising Yoga and taking holidays: these are the measures that mental health experts prescribed to fight stress, anxiety, depression and anger among cops. A session on mental health and stress management for Kolkata Police was held at Behala Blind School on Tuesday.

Over 200 civic volunteers, home guards, constables, sergeants and senior officers attended the hour-long event.

Psychologist Ishita Sanyal and psychiatrist Disha Mukherjee, who addressed cops from DH Road, James Long Sarani and Thakurpukur traffic guards, told senior officers to grant juniors leaves and ensure different postings to fight boredom. “After work, remember to talk about life beyond police duty. While your biggest challenge is not getting to spend time with family and the fact that recognition comes rarely, the most important rule is to keep smiling,” said Sanyal.

Less than three weeks ago, multiple constables had shot themselves. Labazar had recently asked all units for the foot soldiers’ mental health status. “It is not easy to assess the mental health status of juniors as only a few of us have the expertise. Such initiatives help,” said an officer.
