  • Days after four children died after a mound of soil caved in during drainage expansion by the Border Security Force in Uttar Dinajpur’s Chopra, a delegation of Trinamool Congress leaders met Governor CV Ananda Bose on Thursday and sought a probe into the incident. The leaders also urged the Governor to visit Chopra and interact with the residents there.

The TMC alleged negligence on the part of the BSF and said the incident occurred during the digging and deepening of a drain which was being done illegally under the directions of the BSF and without any sanctioned plan or consent of the competent authorities.

Denying the TMC’s charge, the BSF has claimed it was civilians who were carrying out digging work with a JCB machine at the spot where the incident took place. The TMC’s request comes after Bose visited Sandeshkhali on Monday. The TMC alleged that the Governor has received a one-sided report about the situation and it has urged him to seek a report from the state administration as well.

“Even before, the BSF shot innocent Rajbanshi people… However, it is because of them that the four children and three Rajbanshi youths lost their lives,” the party said.

The TMC also hit out at Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari who had alleged that the police barricades put up in Sandeshkhali were to hurt Opposition leaders.

Reacting to Adhikari’s remarks, the party said, “Police are roaming with sharp nails to control farmers’ protests in Delhi. How can he speak like that?”
