  • Kolkata: After the pandemic, sleep industry has clocked high growth in the Kolkata market and it is expected to grow further by 30% in the next two years due to the real estate boom, feel industry experts.

The city contributes 50% of the Rs 1,400-crore organised sleep market in eastern India as many people are splurging on high-end mattresses, pillows and other accessories.

The current market size of the sleep industry in Kolkata is around Rs 700 crore while it is likely to cross Rs 1,000 crore in two years, according to industry players. In India, the overall market size of the sleep industry is Rs 12,000 crore — Rs 14,000 crore. Given the high demand for premium and smart grid sleep products, new players are penetrating the Kolkata market. Ripal Chopda, marketing head of The Sleep Company, told TOI: “Currently, our market in Kolkata is Rs 20 crore. We introduced smart grid mattresses and other sleep products in 2019. In the past three years, we had a surge in online sales from Kolkata and this prompted us to open two offline stores at Salt Lake and Topsia. More are in the offing.”

Over the years there has been a shift from cotton mattresses to PU foam, rubber coir and value-added foams in Kolkata and its suburbs, said Himanshu Mehta, managing director, Napcloud Sleep and Seating Solutions. Subhash Lath, owner of Decohome at Shakespeare Sarani, said, “We are witnessing a rise in demand for premium and high-end mattresses.”
