  • Kolkata: At least one scooterette rider died and five others – travelling on one bike and two scooterettes – were seriously injured after all three crashed into one another on Saturday around 2.15pm on a road located inside the KoPT area near Asgar Garage D.E.B. Road. Ever since the death of a councillor’s son a few years ago, the road usually remains shut to the people and its gates are now manned by CISF personnel.

“The initial probe shows that two two-wheelers were moving in the same direction even as the bike was approaching them from the opposite direction. The bike was being ridden at a very high speed and it collided with both the scooterettes,” said DC (Port) Harikrishna Pai.

Police sources said some labourers returning from the dockyard saw the victim lying on the ground and alerted the police . “We have sought help from CISF to ascertain why the youths had entered the road or whether they are genuine employees. We are also trying to know how exactly the accident took place as stunt biking and racing are not being ruled out as yet,” said an officer.

Sk. Arkan (20), a resident of Bhukailash Road in Ekbalpore, was declared dead at the SSKM hospital. The injured include Soumayjyoti Das (19) of Ramkamal Street in Watgunge, Md. Shami (19) of Kabitirtha Sarani in Khidderpore, Arif Hossain (30) of Budge Budge Road and Sk. Samir (24) of Budge Budge Road. The injuredare undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital. The police sources said while there has been an explosion in bikes hitting the roads post pandemic, there are still some lacuna in the way riders react to traffic challenges . “While the overall compliance on wearing helmets have gone up, there is a lethargy to strap up ,” said a police officer.
