  • Kolkata: The state has approved and sanctioned Rs 2.9 crore to the urban development department for the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) to switch from high-pressure sodium vapour lights to LED and restore all faulty cable lines on the stretch from the Kamalgazi flyover end to Padmapukur More on Southern Bypass towards Baruipur.

The agency engaged for the work will also need to monitor the project for a year. “The plan is to convert to LED lights of equivalent power, replacing the sodium vapour lights. This will be environment friendly and save electricity costs,” said an official.

Officials said that under the Green City Mission scheme, the state was funding urban local bodies to install LED lights in their respective areas.

Several civic bodies, including Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA), have started the switchover. tnn
