  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a probe into the alleged disappearance of a 14-year-old tribal girl in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district, days after the Calcutta High Court directed the agency to look into the case.

The teenaged girl allegedly went missing on August 9, 2023.

The CBI has filed a case under Sections 363 (kidnapping), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent to convey out) 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code based on the FIR filed at the local police station.

Justice Jay Sengupta of the Calcutta High Court had on February 8 ordered the agency to take over the case while observing that the state police were negligent in the matter.

It was alleged that some influential people were sheltering the culprits.

The police’s CID wing, which was investigating the case, interrogated several people but couldn’t trace of the girl.

The court asked the CBI to probe all possible angles, including that of the girl being trafficked to another state or a neighboring country. The agency was directed to file a report on the progress of the investigation on the next hearing on March 13

The girl’s family had told the police that she left home at 6pm on August 9, 2023, for her tuition classes but did not return.

“The victim’s mother alleged that her daughter was kidnapped by some unidentified people. We have filed the FIR and the investigation is on,” said a CBI official.
