  • Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Ananya Bandyopadhyay was issued a show-cause notice after her controversial remarks related to the Christian community during the budget session of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Monday sparked protests.

KMC Mayor Firhad Hakim issued the notice late Monday night.

“The portion of Ananya’s speech where she said this will be expunged from the proceedings,” KMC chairperson Mala Roy said.

During the budget session, Bandyopadhyay had mentioned a story referring to a nun, a priest and the Bible. Her remarks led to several BJP councillors – and many TMC councillors – protesting on the floor.

“This type of statement is unfortunate. Everybody should refrain from such statements,” TMC councillor Christina Biswas said.

BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh referred to the remarks in a post on X, formerly Twitter, and said, “…this is the policy of @MamataOfficial govt towards minorities, when our honourable mayor is also from minority @kmc_kolkata.”

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari also criticised Bandyopadhyay’s statement and highlighted it in a post on X.

Bandyopadhyay, however, claimed that it was “a simple story”. “I do not have any intention to attack any individual or community,” she added.
