• Fire on tracks hits Metro morning peak-hr commute

  • Kolkata: Barely a week after a Metro disruption along the North-South corridor, rush-hour services were thrown haywire once again on Tuesday morning. This time it was the turn of office-goers and school students to be let down by the lifeline. The one-and-a-half-hour ordeal was caused by a snag – a flash detected by the Metro staff on the Kavi Subhas-bound tracks between Park Street and Esplanade stations at 10.15am.

For the next one-and-a-half-hours, services were suspended between Maidan and Girish Park stations since a power block had to be taken to find out the reason behind the flash.“Truncated services were run between Maidan and Kavi Subhas and Girish Park and Dakshineswar stations. Normal services along the entire North-South stretch resumed from 11.40am,” a Metro Railway spokesperson said.

“Either there is a suicide attempt or there is a snag in the Metro. The passengers are always at the receiving end,” said Bonya Chatterjee, who works in a firm at Park Street. She was referring to last Tuesday’s suicide attempt at Jatin Das Park station that had services suspended between Maidan and Tollygunge stations for more than half-an-hour. This time, Chatterjee was on her way to office and found herself stranded at Rabindra Sarobar station because connectivity was cut off beyond Maidan.

Buses were overcrowded and app cab fares shot up manifold.
