• Cops appeal to airport for quick trolley retrieval outside terminal

  • KOLKATA: Bidhannagar Police has appealed to Kolkata airport authorities for quick clearance of trolleys from the road outside the terminal and stack them back at the trolley bay beside the airport gates. The appeal comes in the wake of cops, car drivers and even passengers having to clear the trolleys to make passage for vehicles. A section of flyers dump trolleys on the road after use.

"It has become a regular problem at the airport. Passengers bring out trolleys from inside the airport but after getting on to the cars, they keep the trolleys on the road outside the terminal and leave the airport. It causes obstruction to vehicles and can also lead to an accident any moment. We met the airport manager on Tuesday and told them about the problem. We hope they look into the matter at the earliest," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.

TOI during multiple visits to the airport over the last one week too have found a number of trolleys lying on both ends of the road adjacent to the kerbside. Some trolleys even roll back and pose a serious threat to cars.

According to cops, the retrievers seldom take the trolleys back to the airport immediately. They wait for a significant number of trolleys to accumulate before they stack them and take them back together to the trolley bay.

Last month, TOI had written about passengers complaining about unavailability of trolleys within the terminal, especially in the arrival section. Airport sources said delayed retrieval of trolleys from the road contributes to the scarcity of trolleys.

The airport currently has 6000 trolleys and around 1500 more are undergoing minor repairs. They could be brought into the system as and when needed.

"We are aware of the problem and as a corrective measure, we have asked some airport staff to oversee retrieval of trolleys. We are also in the process of getting a new agency who would be given a timeline between which they will have to retrieve the trolleys back to the scheduled area," said a senior airport official.
