  • Kolkata: A mass communication student of Jadavpur University has lodged a complaint with the JU and West Bengal Women’s Commission alleging that a senior professor has mentally and sexually harassed her during the examination on Wednesday. But students who were taking the exam with her said she was caught during the examination as she had written key points of answers on her palm and was consulting it.

JU acknowledged that the complaint was received.

The student alleged that she was suddenly asked to stop writing by the invigilator and was taken to the professor’s chamber where he forcibly held her hand and tried to push her outside the chamber when she requested him not to debar her from the test. She further alleged that the professor had put ink on her hand forcibly and dragged her outside the chamber to prove that answers were written on palm. “He tried to impose the lie in front of the head of the department and asked me to wash my hands. This was shocking,” she said, demanding re-examination as she had only two to three minutes left to finish the paper.

The senior professor said he was not in-charge of the examination and not aware of any such incident. Teachers said she was looking at left palm while writing answers. When the invigilator spotted her, she refused to open her palm.

Sources said an assistant professor took her and the answer script to the department. “The HoD gave her two options, either her exam paper will be cancelled or she will have to write it again. She chose the second option. The student was also asked to wash her hand before going to exam hall,” said a source. A teacher said the student was back after 10 minutes and she had ample time to complete the paper.
