  • Kolkata/Berhampore: The Bengal STF raided the Howrah station and busted a gang that was running narco trade from N-E states like Nagaland and in the garb of postal services.

    Parcels with heroin worth crores were being brought by the gang through India Post to Bengal and then sold to clients at different parts of the state at high prices, said SP (operations) Indrajit Basu.

    Heroin worth Rs 12 crore (4 kg) has been recovered so far. While one person was nabbed from the parcel section of Howrah station, two more were arrested later from Cossimbazar in Murshidabad while selling the contraband drugs after receiving the same from Beldanga and Nabagram post offices.

    “Acting upon secret information from sources, a team of the STF apprehended one narco dealer from Howrah station named Shafi Islam Shaikh (38), a resident of Berhampore. It could be learnt from Shafi that he and his aides have been running the racket from NE through postal services. Two persons engaged by him have received one such parcel each from Beldanga post office and Nabagram post office in Murshidabad on Feb 21, the same day when he was nabbed. He also added that they were supposed to deliver these drugs to some pre-designated place on the same night,” said Basu.

    Based on his statement, a raid was conducted in Cossimbazar under Berhampore PS. Two persons were arrested after they had come to deliver the drugs.
