  • A seven-member delegation of Sikh community met Governor C V Ananda Bose at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday and expressed their dismay over a recent incident where an IPS officer was called ‘Khalistani’ during a protest led by BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari.

The delegation comprised representatives from seven gurdwaras in the city and was led by Gurmeet Singh. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Singh said the Governor has assured justice and told them that he valued what the Sikh community has done for the country and that he will write to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the issue.

On Tuesday, 2016-batch IPS officer Jaspreet Singh had claimed that a group of protesting Bengal BJP leaders and workers, led by Adhikari, had called him “Khalistani”.  The incident occurred when a police contingent stopped BJP leaders from visiting Sandeshkhali, at Dhamakhali in North 24 Parganas district.  The BJP, however, rejected the allegation.

In a deputation submitted to the Governor, the delegation criticised state BJP leaders for their “cheap and discriminatory remarks”.  Calling for a probe into the incident, the deputation claimed that the IPS officer was subjected to “discriminatory behaviour” because of his “religious identity”.

The Governor announced that a ‘Punjabi Bagh’ would be set up at the Raj Bhavan premises as a symbol of Bengal’s admiration for the Sikh community. In a statement by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor said, “I would like to assure our Punjabi fraternity that Bengal stands by you.”
