A woman pradhan of a Congress-run panchayat in Malda and her husband were attacked by a group of Trinamul supporters on Friday.
Firoza Bibi, who heads the Silampur-II panchayat in Kaliachak-I block of the district, and her husband Nasiruddin Sheikh have sustained injuries. Sheikh is under treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital.
Sources said the couple had been to Calcutta and returned home on Friday.
Sheikh said on Wednesday, his grandfather, who suffers from psychological problems, was roughed up by some people.
“They were Trinamul supporters. Today, they came to our house again and started abusing us without any provocation. As I protested, they tried to kill me with a sharp weapon. I ended up with a head injury and a fractured right hand,” he said.
When Firoza tried to save her husband, the attackers beat her up too. Two brothers of Sheikh were assaulted on the spot. “They were aggrieved with us since we won the panchayat polls here,” she said.
Later, she filed a complaint with the police. “We are looking into the case,” said an officer of Kaliachak police station.
