  • HOWRAH: A class VI student of an English-medium school in Liluah died after being allegedly beaten up by her mother during an altercation at a housing complex in Belur Tiffin Bazar on Friday.

Neighbours said they had heard an altercation between the student, Ananya Shreesam, and her mother over studies and the girl was crying for help when she was being beaten up. Her father, a railway employee, was not at home. They rushed to their flat and found Ananya lying unconscious near her mother. She was taken to Liluah Rail Hospital where she was declared brought dead. Cops have registered an unnatural death case.

DC North Bishop Sarkar said: "We are questioning the girl's mother and her neighbours. We are waiting for the post-mortem report."

Shreyash Roy, a neighbour, said: "Ananya's mother had been scolding her since morning over something pertaining to her studies. When she was beating her up, the girl raised an alarm for help. Hearing her cry, some of the neighbours from A and B blocks rushed to their home. They found the child lying on the floor."

"Her mother confessed to the neighbours that her daughter fell unconscious when she was beating her up. The neighbours took her to the hospital but she died. We have complained to the police against the mother."

Siddhartha Ghosh, secretary of a temple in the area, said: "Parents must monitor their children but the extent of punishment is not expected to be such that a child will have to die. We want exemplary punishment of the accused."
