• Chingrighata trial slows down traffic

  • Kolkata: A day after the traffic trials were initiated at Chingrighata crossing by Kolkata Traffic Police before handing over the site to facilitate construction of a Metro pier, traffic movement was slower than usual on the stretch. But police said the teething issues that had been detected could be addressed. The authorities also carried out a drone surveillance of the area to monitor the traffic situation.

The maximum impact was felt in the evening with the office goers trying to enter Salt Lake and New Town via the narrow road adjoining Jal Vayu Vihar across the canal instead of the Salt Lake Bypass. “Traffic pressure was high between Beliaghata Building More and Chingrighata crossing due to cars trying to turn onto the road. Cars trying to enter Jalvayu Vihar remained stuck on Bypass even as signal from Building More turned green towards Chingrighata. With one lane getting disturbed, traffic was slow,” said a police officer on duty.

“We may have to push a few more vehicles via Salt Lake Stadium Road and Broadway. A few technical issues like auto signal timings are being reworked. We will soon submit a report to Lalbazar based on which a portion of the crossing will be handed over to Metro,” an officer said.

The trial associated with the traffic diversion or blockage needed for the construction of Metro pier adjacent to the Chingrihata Junction of the New Garia-Airport metro corridor, by RVNL authority will continue till Feb 26.

All route buses, govt and private, have been advised to avail Broadway to travel towards New Town and Sector V. Bidhannagar Police ensured that the broadway could handle the extra traffic towards GD Island.
