A gang broke into a jewellery shop in North Dinajpur district on Friday night and decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth around Rs four lakh.
Police have arrested two persons in connection with the theft at the shop in Panjipara, which is under the jurisdiction of Goalpokhar police station.
“I had gold and silver ornaments worth around Rs 4 lakh in the shop. The robbers have taken away everything,” said Sandip Sarkar, the shopowner.
Officers of Panjipara police outpost scanned CCTV footage of the area and soon captured two persons who were suspected of being involved in the burglary.
Both of them are residents of another state and were carrying a firearm, police sources said. “The duo are being questioned to gather information about other members of the gang. Our men are in search of them,” said a police officer.
The incident has left the local business community in Panjipara concerned. They have demanded that the police intensify vigil in commercial areas, especially during night hours.
Family duped
Two miscreants fled with gold ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh from the house of a jute trader under the jurisdiction of Harishchandrapur police station in Malda district on Friday evening.
Keshavmal Jain, the jute trader, has filed a police complaint.
“They came to my house apparently to sell some pain-relieving medicines. Then, they offered a service of polishing old gold ornaments. I gave them gold ornaments weighing around 75 grams. After half an hour, they suddenly ran out of the house with the ornaments and fled on a two-wheeler. We gave them a chase but could not catch them,” said Jain.
The police collected the CCTV footage of the trader’s house. It will be examined to identify the duo, said a police officer.
