  • SILIGURI: The forest department has imposed Section 144 at Teepark and Bhola More on the outskirts of Siliguri after an elephant ventured into the area from Baikunthpur forest. The department sounded an alert in surrounding villages urging people not to step out of their homes at night.

The jumbo, seen at Bhola More area on Saturday, had probably entered through Canal Road and Bhalobasha More, said a forest official, adding that they were trying to drive back the jumbo into the forest."Forest teams from Baikunthapur division and Sukna elephant squad have been deployed," said principal chief conservator of forests Niraj Singhal. Recently, the department had chased away two elephants - which had taken refuge at Zero Point on the Indo-Bangla border in the Phansidewa Bandargach area - to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary.
