  • KOLKATA: The leader of the Indian Secular Front (ISF), Ayesha Bibi, was arrested by the police on Sunday in the Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district.

She is accused of being involved in the burning of poultry farms owned by Shibaprasad Hazra, a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader who is currently in custody.

The police have also detained several villagers who are suspected of participating in the vandalism.

"We have found her involvement in burning one property during an agitation in Sandeshkhali. She has taken up law and order in her own hands which will not be allowed. We are following the provisions in the law for such involvement", the police officer said.

He, however, did not want to disclose the exact number of villagers detained for vandalism.

The Sandeshkhali area, located on the borders of the Sunderbans, has been witnessing protests for over a month.

The demonstrations are against TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh, who is currently on the run, and his supporters. The protests are fueled by allegations of land encroachment and sexual abuse of locals.
