• ‘Seniors have right to live with dignity’

  • Kolkata: It is time for the senior citizens to know about their rights, said Justice IP Mukerji, judge of Calcutta High Court and executive chairman of State Legal Services Authority.

    Justice Mukerji was speaking at a seminar in Haldia on rights of senior citizens. He said Article 21 speaks about right to life and it is also about protecting elderly citizens’ rights so that they can live with dignity.

    He wanted the judicial officers and administration to be proactive to sensitize the society about rights of senior citizens. The seminar was also attended by residents of seven old age homes run by the state in East Midnapore.

    Priyabrata Datta, district judge of E Midnapore, said with joint families no more in existence, problems related to care and maintenance issues of the elderly people are increasing. Dev Kumar Sukul, member secretary of SLSA, said the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 has helped set up tribunals that are chaired by SDOs. tnn
