• If elected govt not acting according to law, I will intervene, says Governor
    Indian Express | 28 February 2024
  • With the ongoing unrest in the Sandeshkhali area of the state’s North 24 Parganas district refusing to peter down, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Monday pointed out that if the elected state government is not taking action acording to the rule of law, then he will intervene in the matter.

Bose, who attended a rail programme in Hooghly, said that women from Sandeshkhali have started coming forward and over 800 complaints have been received. “From what I understand from newspapers, more than 800 complaints have been received. The process has started, women have come forward and now there will be a change… Generals may not fight, they make others fight. The Governor’s job is to see when the elected government takes action within the rule of law. If that is not done, then the Governor will intervene.”

The Governor welcomed the Calcutta High Court decision on absconding Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh, saying, “What the court has said is final. There should be no excuse for not arresting Shahjahan Sheikh.”

The High Court on Monday said there was no stay on the arrest of Shahjahan Sheikh.

Irani questions ‘Cong silence on sexual abuse’

What happened in Sandeshkhali is beyond the comprehension of any Indian, Union Minister Smriti Irani said on Monday and questioned the Congress’ silence on alleged sexual abuse of women by TMC supporters in the village.

Congress people want to go there and talk, but the “shehzada”, who is still lost in the maze of politics, has not said a word on this matter, the Women and Child Development Minister said in an apparent reference to senior party leader Rahul Gandhi.
