Two spotted deer have been found dead at a deer park in Malda district with reports suggesting that the facility has little for the treatment of animals.
The park is at Baroduari in Harishchandrapur 2 block. The cause of the deaths is yet to be ascertained.
Another deer has been found sick and taken to the veterinary hospital in Malda for treatment.
Administrative sources said that the deer were found dead at night.
Doctors in the state animal husbandry department are yet to ascertain the cause of the deaths and will conduct a post-mortem of the carcasses, said the sources.
Tapas Pal, the Harishchandrapur 2 block development officer, said there was no shortage of food and care for deer at the park.
“Altogether, 32 deer are in the park. However, the facilities for their treatment in case of any ailment are not sufficient. The block animal husbandry department has been requested by us to take care of the health of the other deer at the park,” said Pal.
Amit Khatua, the block’s animal husbandry officer, conceded lapses in the health infrastructure of animals in the block.
“We are taking measures to examine the health of the other deer. The sick one is being separately treated,” he said.
