  • Lohia Matri Sewa Sadan Hospital, one of the oldest maternity hospitals in the city that has been lying non-functional for the past few years, will soon be transformed into a 200-bed super speciality hospital.

With a 60-year lease, Charnock Hospital administration will renovate the heritage structure while preserving its old charm, as the Lohia Matri Sadan is listed in the Grade 1 Heritage list of West Bengal. The heritage structure, which was operational from 1941 till 2016, will be renamed as Charnock Lohia Hospital. The project will involve an investment of rupees 160 crore.

The renovated hospital will feature four to six operation theatres, a catheterization laboratory (room with diagnostic imaging equipment), and a Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS)/Neuro OT. It also aims to offer more than 90 ward beds, 20 cabins, a 10-bed emergency department, a 70-bed ICU, and a 10-bed dialysis unit. Located within 500m of Girish Park Metro Station, Lohia Matri Sadan is easily accessible from Nimtala Ghat Street, Jorasanko, and Vivekananda Road.

Sharing the details of its upcoming project at a press conference on Thursday, Prashant Sharma, MD, Charnock Hospital, said, “Charnock Hospital has an immediate vision of expanding with almost 200-bed super specialty hospitals spread across the periphery of entire West Bengal, catering to the healthcare needs of people…. with our motto — ‘Patient First’.

The population near Burrabazar is very dense, with no good hospital nearby. Charnock Lohia Hospital will involve an investment of 160 crores… will create 850-890 jobs. The hospital is expected to be ready by April 2025,” Charnock Hospital is a 300-bed super specialty hospital with focus on high-end Tertiary & Quaternary care treatments.
