Boys on cycle with earphones on run over by truck on e-way

Kolkata: Two boys aged between 14 and 16, who were cycling towards Nimta from Sodepur on Kalyani Expressway with earphones on, were crushed to death by a cement-laden truck on Thursday evening. The duo was identified as Sagor Ghosh, a resident of Belegharia, and Sheikh Rana, a resident of Sodepur Muragachha.
The incident led to a mob damaging the truck after chasing it till Teghoria crossing.The driver, who managed to flee the spot, was later arrested. Angry locals, alleging negligence on the part of traffic police, launched an agitation by blocking the expressway.
A large contingent of police, including RAF and combat force led by senior officers of Barrackpore Commissionerate later reached the spot to bring the situation under control.
Police, however, said that with earphones on, they couldn’t hear the truck honking. “When the duo on the cycle finally saw the vehicle, it was too late. They came under the front wheel of the speeding truck,” a senior officer of Barrackpore Commissionerate said. According to locals, the incident took place around 8.30 pm on Thursday after the two took a right turn at Teghoria More to take the Nimta-bound flank of Kalyani Expressway.
