  • Kolkata: Kolkata Police is set to send an SOS to the KMC, requesting the civic authorities to pull down the abandoned building on C R Avenue that was ravaged in the fire caused by an overturned oil tanker last Wednesday. Cops will also approache the current owner of the vacant building, waiting to be redeveloped.

The fire damaged the mansion so much that chunks of concrete had been crashing down ever since, most of them on the adjoining lane, used by hundreds every day, said police. The proximity of the M G Road Metro station made the stretch even busier. “A joint inspection by KMC, experts and the fire brigade is required, followed by quick action,” said a Central division officer.

Another officer pointed out they cordoned off a section of the road and the bylane. “But pedestrian and motorists are still at risk, especially after dark as the lamp posts in the area melted in the blaze,” said an officer.

The owner said they, too, wanted to raze the structure. “Some technical reasons have held up the work. We, too, want the KMC to guide us in this,” said the owner.
