  • Kolkata is the first city to have been gifted India’s first metro service, following which other metro cities took inspiration from. And now the city will witness another historic development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the country’s first under-river metro tunnel in Kolkata on March 6, said Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.The tunnel built under Hooghly or River Ganga is part of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West Metro corridor that connects Howrah Maidan to Esplanade. The Prime Minister is also set to inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat sections of the Kolkata metro on the same day.The underwater metro is expected to cover a 520-metre stretch in just 45 seconds. The primary aim of metro services in the said areas is to decongest road traffic and provide convenient transportation.
