  • Kolkata: The extension of the Joka-Taratala Metro line by one more station has had a remarkable impact on Majerhat, transforming what was till not-so-long ago a poorly lit railway siding that felt unsafe after dark into a bustling hub where commuters can seamlessly connect with three railway modes — Metro, Circular, and Suburban.

“What was once a haunt for dubious activities and occasional crime has become a vibrant hub for young people to socialize. The Metro link has rendered the place unrecognizable,” said Abhisek Garg, a resident of New Alipore.

Prior to the metamorphosis, Majerhat was primarily an industrial area with railway sidings. With the promise of Metro connectivity, it has evolved into a commercial hub, rubbing shoulders with an international school and corporate headquarters of FMCG giants. A couple of years ago, the once old and narrow Majerhat bridge was replaced with a modern, wider structure, symbolizing the area’s transformation.

Infrastructure like the underutilized flyover from Majerhat to Brooklyn Point is now being effectively utilized, as confirmed by a KMC engineer. However, the most interesting aspect is the mobility choice Majerhat is adding for commuters of the city. “People of Behala and Thakurpukur can easily access Dalhousie by taking the Metro and then changing to the Circular rail seamlessly to reach their destination within half an hour,” said Salil Bardhan, a resident of Behala.

The once dimly lit and neglected surroundings have been replaced with well-lit streets and the Majerhat Metro station stands as an architectural marvel. With a new RoB and a gleaming Metro station, Majerhat radiates a newfound sense of vitality and progress, said Anup Dutta, a local resident.

The project endeavours to rejuvenate the station’s aesthetics while celebrating Kolkata’s rich heritage and artistic legacy. Cultural murals showcasing local themes and motifs adorn the station walls, offering commuters a visually captivating experience. Furthermore, architectural refinements, such as intricate detailing, enhance both the station’s ambiance and functionality, said Kausik Mitra, chief public relations officer of Metro Railway.
