  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said if the Central government failed to release money for the welfare schemes in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress government would fund these projects on its own.

Addressing a public service  distribution programme in Paschim Medinipur district, Banerjee said, “Remember, if the Bengal government guarantees something, it is fulfilled. But that does not happen if it is done by the Central government. Their guarantees are like gas balloons. Once the elections are over, the balloons burst.”

The Chief Minister also hit out at the Railways for cancelling the bookings of special trains to carry people for ‘Jana Garjan Sabha’ at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade ground on March 10.

“We will not take alms from Delhi. We will execute the Ghatal master plan,” she added.

“We have fulfilled all promises made. All sections of people in West Bengal get benefits under the state’s schemes. But had anyone got Beti Padhao benefit of Centre?”

About ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’, a financial assistance scheme for the state’s women, the CM said her government has been spending Rs 25,000-30,000 crore under it. From April onwards, beneficiaries receiving Rs 500 per month under the scheme will receive Rs 1,000, while those getting Rs 1,000 will receive Rs 1,200 per month, she said. The chief minister said while an LPG cylinder costs over Rs 1,000 thanks to the BJP-led, her government offers “free rice” to the poor.

Banerjee launched an indirect attack on BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, stating, “The soil of Medinipur is the soil of Vidyasagar. This land does not support traitors.” Adhikari who hails from the region was a former TMC minister in the state.
