  • Kolkata: For East-West Metro’s motormen Dipak Kumar and Joydeep Ghosh, it was a moment they will remember forever. While Kumar drove the country’s first under-river Metro to Howrah Maidan after it was flagged off from Esplanade, Ghosh was the first to drive on the return journey to Esplanade. Kumar was also the one who had driven East-West Metro’s inaugural train from Sector V station in Feb 2020.

On Wednesday, Kumar also got the opportunity to drive Prime Minister Narendra Modi through India’s first under-river stretch. Modi, along with Metro officials, took the ride from Esplanade to Howrah Metro station.

Both Kumar and Ghosh looked happy to become a part of history. “It’s India’s most advanced Metro and we feel proud to be a part of this historical moment. This will remain a milestone in our careers,” Ghosh said.

“We were not there when the first Metro was run in the city 40 years ago. As we have been doing for the last many years, we will continue driving Metro rakes. But, today’s experience will remain etched in our minds forever. It’s a very special feeling that cannot be described in words,” Kumar said.
