  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has approached Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) with a plan to change the position of street lights, especially in added areas, so that more road space can be created.

Among the roads identified where such relocation is now needed, the maximum are in added areas of Behala, Baghajatin, Mukundapur and Tollygunge on Golf Club Road, Raja Rammohan Roy Road, MG Road, Biren Roy Road and Buroshibtala Road along with Chitpur Road in the north.

Cops have cited the example of Biren Roy Road. “This lamp post was located barely 200 metres from the Behala Chowrasta Metro station and right next to the local auto stand. A simple relocation saw easier traffic flow as well as free entry and exit to an adjoining petrol pump,” explained the ACP.

At the district road safety meeting, cops said that a joint inspection involving cops led by DC (Traffic South) and KMC engineers at each of these spots is necessary to ascertain where exactly these street lights can be relocated. According to police, certain street lights were set up several years ago on these stretches, mainly roads that connect the main DH Road, SP Mukherjee Road and NS Bose Road in Behala and Tollygunge or even the BT Road in the north.
