  • A day after getting former TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan in their custody, CBI officials visited Shahjahan’s office, home, and a market named after him in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali on Thursday. The officials were accompanied by a sizable number of central armed forces during their operation in Sarberia More, and Notunbajar in Sandeshkhali.

As per sources, the CBI was interrogating Shahjahan and his call detail records were also under the agency’s scanner. Sleuths were reportedly trying to find out whom Shahjahan contacted after he went into hiding post the attack on ED officials when the latter went to raid his premises in connection to an alleged ration scam on January 5. The West Bengal Police nabbed Shahjahan on February 29, 55 days after the attack on ED officials.

On Wednesday, a CBI team met senior cops of the Basirhat police district to collect case-related documents.

CBI officials rushed to Sandeshkhali on Wednesday night within a few hours of taking Shahjahan into custody. They were accompanied by a ‘large’ contingent of central forces.

In its FIR dated March 5, the CBI booked Shahjahan under IPC sections for rioting, and criminal intimidation, among others.

Shahjahan, accused of instigating a mob to attack a team of ED officials in Sandeshkhali, was handed over to the CBI on Wednesday by the West Bengal Police. Shahjahan was taken into CBI custody from the Bengal Police CID headquarters following a directive from the Calcutta High Court.
