  • Officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have been going door-to-door in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali looking for supporters of Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and those accused in connection with the January 5 assault of ED officials who had gone to search his premises over an alleged ration scam.

The sleuths are contacting all the people who were in touch with Shahjahan over the phone on January 5 and executed the attack, said officials. The CBI has so far managed to obtain records of 28 such calls.

On Friday, Shahjahan was taken for a medical examination at the ESI Hospital in Joka. Speaking to reporters there, the TMC leader said, “Everything will be proved. I have faith in God, He will do justice.”

In a statement, the CBI said, “Assistance of forensic teams for an examination of the places of occurrence was also taken. Several incriminating documents and material exhibits have been seized during the searches.”

The residence of Shahjahan in Sandeshkhali was also searched for the second consecutive day on Friday in connection with the probe.

Sources said they are using a 3D major scanning system to click pictures of the spots being searched. The CBI also visited areas near his house in Akunjipara locality of Sarberia to collect more evidence.

Sandeshkhali TMC MLA Sukumar Mahato, meanwhile, revealed that Shahjahan spoke to him after the January 5 attack. The legislator claimed that he asked Shahjahan to ensure that there was no further unrest in Sandeshkhali. “I don’t do party work actively here. I don’t have much influence,” he said.

On Friday, the CBI also searched the house of a villager while searching for the mobile phone of a person named Abu Hossain Molla who is allegedly close to Shahjahan and addresses him as “bhai”. Shahjahan had reportedly spoken to him on January 5. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), in its complaint, claims that 800-1,000 people were involved in the attack.

The West Bengal Police nabbed Sheikh Shahjahan on February 29, 55 days after the attack on ED officials. He was handed over to the central agency on Wednesday.

In pursuance of the orders of the Calcutta High Court, the probe into the attack on ED officers were handed over to the CBI by the West Bengal Police and three FIRs were registered with the CBI, Anti Corruption Branch, Kolkata.

Shahjahan’s custody was taken from the West Bengal Police CID on March 6. “The case papers were also collected from the respective police stations and sections like attempt to murder, dacoity etc were added to it,” said the CBI.
