  • KOLKATA: Kolkata, known for its vibrant culture and rich heritage, celebrated International Women's Day with fervor and enthusiasm. The city came alive with a plethora of events and activities aimed at honoring and empowering women from all walks of life.

One of the highlights of the day was a grand rally organized by the women’s cell and NSS unit of Victoria Institution College, which held a walkathon on Friday morning advocating for gender equality and inclusivity in all spheres of life.

The group, comprising teachers and students, marched from the college campus to Raja Rammohan Roy Memorial Museum, carrying placards and banners with the slogan “Inspire Inclusion: Embracing Women's Voices Across Cultures”.

Maitreyi Ray Kanjilal, the Principal of Victoria Institution (College), lauded the event, stating: “Events like these serve as a reminder of the collective strength we possess in driving positive change.”

Also on Friday, a group of women from an all-woman social welfare organization in New Town – Mrittika – celebrated International Women's Day with sex workers from Kidderpore Munsigunj.

TOI had reported about the group when they had broken barriers by worshipping a Muslim girl as Kumari during Durga Puja last year.

On Friday, the women gifted the sex workers a gift hamper that included dry ration, a miniature Durga idol, and bedsheets. The group also collected clay samples from Munsigunj as part of a ritual to kick off their Durga Puja initiative for this year.
