  • DAYS AFTER an 18-year-old woman filed a police complaint alleging that five persons – including a minor – gangraped her in Kolkata, an Alipore court on Friday sent four of the accused to police custody till March 18. The minor has been sent to a juvenile home, police said.

Sources in the police said that one of the accused is the son of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor, adding that a probe is on.

According to the police, in a complaint filed on Tuesday, the girl alleged that the accused persons had spiked her drink and then molested her. The five were detained on Wednesday but were released on bail a day later.

“However, the girl produced a video related to the incident after which the section of gangrape was added. The five were held again and produced before a court on Friday,” said a senior police officer.

“A case was filed under IPC section 341 (any man who assaults or uses criminal force to any woman), 323 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 354 (assaults or uses criminal force to any woman), 509 (whoever, intending to insult the modesty of any woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison), 376 D (gangrape) and 114 (abettors present when offence was committed),” added the officer.

“Four persons and a minor have been named in the case. The four (adults) have been remanded in police custody till March 18,” said the officer.

Meanwhile, workers of the BJP and the CPI(M) staged protests outside the police station concerned, demanding stringent punishment for the culprits.

CPI(M) members blocked a road near the police station over the incident. Shortly after, BJP members also reached the spot to hold a demonstration. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, who led the BJP protest, raised questions over women’s safety in the state.
