• Four held after clash on Amherst St

  • Kolkata: Several persons were injured as a clash broke out on Amherst Street on Thursday night over an alleged attempt to extort Rs 5,000 from a resident for Shivratri celebrations.

    Police have so far arrested four persons, including a notorious criminal, who has been under police scanner ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Among those arrested were Ram Das, Shyam Das and Santosh Das, said police.One of the accused, said police, had eight cases pending against him. “We are likely to move court and debar him from entering this police station area,” said an officer.

    A resident of Keshab Chandra Sen Street alleged a local group had demanded Rs 5,000 from him for the celebration but he had refused, followed which he was threatened.

    The local police denied allegations of the clash being between two rival groups. But cops arranged for a flag march of the central forces (CAPF) in the area. CCTV footage from the area has been collected for the probe.
