Kolkata: The Kasba police station jurisdiction will be bifurcated and a new one will be set up at Rajdanga, which may start functioning immediately after the Lok Sabha elections, senior Lalbazar officers have hinted.
The bifurcation of Kasba police station has been a long-standing demand of the locals. Cops gave the green signal in 2014 as the population exploded on both the sides of the Garia connector.A large area — extending from Garfa to Tiljala — is presently under the Kasba PS. As per plans, the areas closer to E M Bypass and DPS Ruby Park will come under the new police station. The older Kasba, including Talbagan and Haltu areas, will continue to remain with the old police station.
“Of late, there has been a rise in petty thefts in the area. The areas on both sides of the RB Connector have diverse characters. It is natural that Rajdanga residents will get their own police station, which can focus on senior citizens,” said Anita Basu, a Rajdanga resident.
Debasish Banerjee, an academician, stated that the bifurcation will be helpful to lakhs of residents. “Perhaps a few areas have changed in Kolkata as much as Kasba has. This area is now the commercial hub of the south. Outsiders should not create trouble here,” said Banerjee.
The police stations are selected on the basis of their crime rate vis-a-vis the population explosion of the area. “We have plans to make more police stations so that the area becomes manageable and we are able to provide effective policing. This is a continuous process and we have written to Nabanna to approve more police stations. One such plan is to bifurcate Haridevpur police station,” said an additional CP.
