  • Kolkata: The Pragati Maidan police has arrested two persons for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman inside a rented car. The incident was reported on Sunday in the Durgapur area close to Dhapa, around 2.5 km off EM Bypass.

The cops are looking for a third accused.

According to joint CP (crime), Syed Waquar Raza, an FIR pertaining to gang-rape was filed under IPC Section 376D based on a written complaint by the survivor claiming she was sexually abused by Bikash Dutta, Chandan Gupta and Srikanta.

“The incident took place inside a parked vehicle. The woman’s medical examination was done at NRS Medical College. Chandan and Bikash have been arrested and confessed to committing the crime. They were presented before an Alipore court and sent to police custody for 10 days,” said Raza.

Police sources said that the main accused, Bikash, had rented the vehicle on Sunday morning. He then invited the woman, a resident of Anandapur, to join him for a bike ride and some tea. The survivor had reportedly married a year ago but had been estranged from her husband for the last four months.

The two of them roamed around EM Bypass and Basanti Highway on the bike. The two other accused reportedly joined them from the Purba Panchanantala area. It was late at night that the three reached the desolate spot at Durgapur and went inside a parked 16-seater vehicle. The woman alleged that the accused committed the crime after drugging her.

The woman somehow returned home from the spot alone. Later, on Monday, she approached Pragati Maidan police station. Although she could not state clearly, she said she was tortured near Dhapa. “We fixed up the exact area of crime after the arrest of the accused and recovered the vehicle,” said an officer.

Cops stated that they have collected necessary CCTV footage from the traffic cameras to ascertain the route taken by the accused before actually committing the crime. Cops have also seized the apparels of the survivor and sent them for forensic analysis. A prayer is being made before the magistrate to record her statement.
