Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar to be renamed as Ahilyanagar after 18th century Maratha Queen

The Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal to rename its city Ahmednagar as Ahilyanagar after the 18th century Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar. The government’s proposal to rename the city was first proposed by the state’s chief minister Eknath Shinde in May last year.Ahmednagar city was named after Ahmed Nizamshah, who founded the Ahmednagar town in the 15th century. Meanwhile, names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad were changed to Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv respectively in 2022.
