  • Kolkata: Doctors at a Kolkata hospital conducted a renal transplant surgery on a morbidly obese male patient. Due to obesity-related health complications, doctors used robotic transplant surgery, making it the first robot-assisted kidney transplant in eastern India.

According to doctors at RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS), where the transplant was done, the 45-year-old Kolkata resident weighing over 111 kg was battling kidney failure but was refused an open kidney transplant by few hospitals due to the high risk involved. The traditional open surgery on such morbidly obese patient has risks, including wound complications, extended hospital stay and heightened susceptibility to infections. Due to these reasons the team, including doctors Deepak Shankar Ray, Tarshid Ali Jahangir, Satyadip Mukherjee and Ravi Ranjan, decided to go for robot-assisted surgery.

“Robotic surgery emerges as a preferred choice, offering precise interventions tailored to individual patient needs. With this case, we made a significant advancement in our ability to provide optimal care for such patients,” said Deepak Shankar Ray, senior consultant in nephrology.

While the surgery was conducted three months ago and the patient was discharged after 10 days, the medical team waited till they were sure about the success to announce the case.

“Through the successful execution, we’ve not only saved a life but also paved the way for a new era of surgical precision,” said Tarshid Ali Jahangir, consultant, GI, renal transplant and robotic surgeon.
