  • KOLKATA: The Department of ENT, Medical College Hospital Kolkata (MCHK) now has state of the art ENT Workstation. Inaugurated on Saturday this integrated ENT Workstation console is for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, where every single microscopic and endoscopic equipment have been incorporated in a single setting, facilitating early diagnosis without the need for the patient to move from one place to another.

The modern diagnostic tools installed in the unit are expected to improve accuracy of diagnoses in a lesser amount of time. Minor surgical procedures can also be done with the radiofrequency probe, on an out-patient basis.

The century-old ENT Department at MCHK is one of the oldest ENT facilities not only in West Bengal but in the country. This integrated ENT workstation in this medical institute in Kolkata is the first of its kind among any state-run medical college in Eastern India.

During the financial year 2023-24, the hospital acquired a number of modern surgical and diagnostic equipment, in the form of the integrated ENT workstation, the new generation neonatal and paediatric bronchoscope with optical forceps, the coagulation-ablation (Coblation) system, and monitor microdebrider assembly, with support from the Bengal government.

Inaugurated by Pradip Majumder, Minister-in-charge, Government of West Bengal and Dr Sudipto Roy, Chairman of Rogi Kalyan Samiti, MCHK the unit has modern instruments worth close to rupees two crores.

“We have plans of installing a modern Temporal Bone Dissection Laboratory for development of surgical skill, resuming the Cochlear Implantation Programme under ADIP scheme and introducing the Audiovisual and Recording devices for intraoperative documentation for further improvement of surgical procedures,” said Dr Saumendra Nath Bandyopadhyay Professor ENT department head.
