  • Kolkata: The state on Saturday sanctioned Rs 1.7 crore to KMDA to restore the blacktop of the carriageway of the east-bound as well as Garia ramps of Maa flyover and Rs 1.4 crore for the repair and replacement of rainwater pipe and fittings of the elevated corridor.

Officials called it a routine maintenance work that they undertook from time to time on the much-used and busy flyover.

It was in Aug that the authorities had last conducted repairs of the Maa flyover’s east-bound ramp by peeling off the damaged bitumen layer. Officials said but some spots on that ramp and the Garia arm showed signs of wear and tear afresh that needed to be addressed.

As for the storm and rainwater network of the flyover, the officials had previously replaced all the old storm water pipes. But, officials said, some of the rainwater pipes, along with the fittings, needed to be repaired and replaced at some places to prevent waterlogging on the flyover following a heavy spell of showers.

KMDA also plans to replace damaged bearings and rubber seals on the flyover’s expansion joints. “A rubber seal is a V-shape structure placed on expansion joints of flyovers to protect the joints from rainwater, prolonged sunlight and dust. Rubber seals wear off over time and if they are not replaced, the expansion joints and bearings could get damaged,” said a bridge expert.
