  • Kolkata: The NKDA has initiated the process to engage an agency that will capture, sterilise and vaccinate stray dogs in New Town and also treat injured or sick animals.

Around 4,000 stray dogs roam the streets of the township. “A team will catch strays and bring them to the NKDA run-cattle and dog pound. The agency will be responsible for the strays’ sterilisation, along with pre-operative preparation and post-operative care, till they fully recover. They will be released, according to the norms under the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules 2023,” an official said.

The team will hire a full-time veterinary doctor, a dog squad comprising two persons with the expertise in catching strays. The dog squad will also have three workers, trained in caring for the animals. The capture, surgery and release date of any stray dog will have to be fixed in consultation with the veterinary officer of NKDA.

At regular intervals, NKDA will also have the right to check the quality of food given to the strays. If the food was found to be of poor quality, it would be rejected, said an official.

NKDA has been urging residents to follow its advisory issued on the management of stray dogs. The guidelines laid down last year include having designated feeding zones within housing complexes, adopting stray dogs, spreading awareness and following the animal welfare board of India’s guidelines, issued in 2015.
