• Norwester likely to hit Kolkata today evening, Sunday; orange alert in south Bengal districts

  • Norwester, a strong northwest wind, is likely to hit Kolkata on Saturday and Sunday, putting the city and other South Bengal districts on Orange alert, said India Meteorological Department.

    Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind moving at a speed of 40-50kmph are likely to be experienced in the regions, experts said.

    With the maximum temperature at 34 degrees during daytime and humidity at 96 per cent, the Norwester is very likely to arrive towards Saturday evening, the IMD said.

    Other parts of south Bengal districts where orange alert is in place are North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Howrah, Hooghly, Purulia, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Bankura, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia, the Met Department stated.

    Orange alert for thundersquall with gusty wind (speed reaching 50-60 kmph) is put in place on Sunday at North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Howrah, Kolkata, Purulia, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Bankura and East Burdwan.

    After Sunday, thunderstorms or light to moderate rain is expected to continue till Thursday throughout south Bengal. The maximum temperature in most of the places like Purulia, Sriniketan, Burdwan, Bankura, Krishnanagar and Bishnupur is hovering around 35 and 36 degree Celsius during daytime.

    Meanwhile, Darjeeling and Kalimpong, on the other hand, might experience light rainfall or thunderstorms at one or two places on Saturday.

    The maximum temperature in Darjeeling and Kalimpong is hovering around 18-20 degrees. Meanwhile, regions such as Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda are expected to remain dry till next week, with Siliguri, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar hitting around 31-33 degree Celsius during daytime.
